1. Kongfrontation
Kongfrontation was removed in 2002 to make way for Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride when, in my opinion, it had so much more to offer. Guests entered the attraction through an intimidating recreation of Pennsylvania Station as it appeared in New York City at the beginning of the 20th century (complete with massive amounts of graffiti and garbage cans etc). As they headed further in, within the six-story walls of the massive show building, guests would find themselves in an elaborate production set simulating a New York subway station, Manhattan's Roosevelt Island tram station and a surrounding city block with fully-stocked stores and views in to residential windows. Overhead television monitors displayed a special WWOR-TV news report entitled "Kong on the Loose", anchored by real-life newscaster Rolland Smith. That's right; the giant ape King Kong had escaped his confines and was running rampant on the streets of New York. Kong had already destroyed two elevated trains and was rapidly approaching the East River with authorities seemingly powerless to stop him. Clips from the 1976 version of King Kong portraying the beast's rampage played during these newscasts. The queue made its way up a long ramp and ended at the elevated Manhattan station of the Roosevelt Island Tramway. Guests would then board a large, open-air aerial tram vehicle which was tuned to the police emergency frequency so that guests could be informed of Kong's location in the city. The tram travelled above the streets of downtown New York City where guests could view Kong's path of destruction. The giant beast attacked the trams, pounding their roofs whilst fighting off police helicopters and blasting guests with his banana breath, even picking the trams up and dropping them with the guests inside at one stage. As he retreated (never having actually been defeated, but at least leaving New York City), the brave surviving riders were treated to a mock news report with footage of their own ride experience showing. It was a very fun ride that could have gone on as it was quite easily, or it could've been revamped to be more like Peter Jackson's modern interpretation of the character to capitalise on the success of that movie. Regardless, it's sad that it is no longer there. So there you have it; Five attractions that Universal Orlando should consider building, five attractions that Universal Orlando should get rid of and five attractions that Universal Orlando should never have removed.
