The idea of electronic devices in our eyes is simultaneously one of the most terrifying and awesome concepts in the world. A videogame-style UI seamlessly integrated into our day-to-day vision, showing us our hunger, nutritional information, and a little arrow pointing us where we want to go sounds kind of amazing. But if someone hacks one of these ocular computers and starts using it to control our minds, then that would be pretty nightmarish. I'm getting a little carried away with my fantasies/fears that Deus Ex will soon be a reality, but Google's smart contact lenses project is a small step towards that future. The contact lens is like a standard sight-boosting one but with a microchip built into it which analyses liquids in the wearer's eyes to monitor sugar levels in the body. These contact could make life much easier for diabetics, who currently have to go through the grim process of pricking their fingers and drawing blood every day to track their blood sugar; a practice that sounds decidedly medieval compared to a digi-contact lens. These plucky little gadgets have been patented by Google, and pharmaceutical company Novartis has already licensed them - which suggests that there are serious plans to bring them to the healthcare market soon.
