5 Shocking Things You Were Never Taught About Abraham Lincoln
5. He Was Actually A Racist
The general view of Lincoln, as popularised by historians who ought to remain terse on Abe, is that of a man who thought the white and black races equal, a man who wanted nothing more than to see slaves roam free among the general populous. This is a total miscalculation of a very bad President and a very good politician. When speaking to a Delegation of black people at the White House he informed them of an apparent-fact which was not a fact: You and we are different races and ours suffers from your presence. Is this not a racist man? Ill continue, you may need convincing like millions of other people. On July 17, 1858 he said; What I would most desire would be the separation of the white and black races. Youre still not convinced? Really? Fine, fine. In his famous debates with Stephen Douglas he said: I have no purpose to introduce political and social equality between the white and black races and I, as-well as Judge Douglas, am in favour of the race to which I belong having the superior position. This is a racist.
