Street Soldier is being described as Andy McNab's most autobiographical novel to date, drawing heavily on his experiences growing up and in the army.

Much like Sean Harker, McNab became embroiled in gangs growing up in London, ended up in prison, and was ultimately offered a way out by the armed forces.

McNab has said that "it’s a book that feels very personal" to him, and that Sean is based partially on him, "although only the good bits." As for the other characters in the book, the author said:

"I’ve used bits of people I served with in the army for some of those characters, and also a few old mates I remember from my days getting into trouble in Peckham have influenced the characters who made up Sean’s ‘family’ of gang members before he got sent to prison."
