6. Current Trends
Growing up, it's important to stay ahead of the curve. The best way of doing this is to make sure you're eyebrow deep in popular trends that hold great significance for you and your chums (+1 to my Old Man stats for using the word 'chums' to describe young people). Years ago this meant buying magazines to keep up with the latest music, TV or other pop culture vogue. You'd watch blockbuster films on their weekend release or listen to the weekly run down on radio chart shows to fill up that sizeable slice of your life where these things came into play. These were the important issues. Nowadays, trends thrive and fizzle out on a much quicker and grander scale, thanks to the Internet. TV shows, such as "The Walking Dead", "Game Of Thrones" and "Breaking Bad", go through lightening fast phases of fan appreciation. On social media sites, they become the hot subject mimetically working their way through the zeitgeist until the next trend comes along. At age thirty, I'm less interested in what to keep up to date with. Even though I have social media at my disposal, I actually find myself caring less and less about it the more it's mentioned. I have no interest in celebrity endeavours or viral videos. True, there was a time I'd have been downright overjoyed at Justin Bieber's retirement announcement, but now I look on it with disinterest. Do you know why? Because he doesn't impact my life in any way. I'm not a fan, but I'm not some 'hater' either (-1 to my Old Man stats for using a common colloquial). When it comes to trends, if it's something I'm interested in, I'll engage at my own pace. If it's something I don't find intriguing...meh. *cracks open a beer*
