7 Things The Victorians Loved To See Beside The Sea

6. Donkey Rides

Donkey rides were a well loved part of a Victorian seaside holiday that are still on offer today and remain popular. For a small fee, the donkeys would be led up and down the beach at a walking pace while carrying children on their backs. Donkey rides are a long standing seaside tradition that have been on offer in Weston Super Mare since 1886.

The donkeys would wear colourful jackets with their names printed on them so that the children riding them could see what their names were and feel as if they were friends. The summer holiday months also served as a holiday for the donkeys themselves as they tended to have come to the seaside from factories and industries close to the coast.
