7 Things You Need To Know About SpaceX's Plan To Put A Million People On Mars
1. The Exciting Bit
Problems aside, the potential of this big idea could have massive implications for the future of the human race. This could be history book stuff.
Musk isn't just stopping at Mars. The idea is that, once the infrastructure is in place, planet hopping throughout the solar system is a much smaller step for mankind.
The ITS is more than just a rocket, it's an entire system of boosters, bases, ships, propellant plants and refueling stations that, if dotted between, say, Earth Mars, Titan, Enceladus and Europa where the resources for fuel production are present, could create an interplanetary highway of sorts. This is, of course, far in the future, but every great journey begins with a single step.
Musk conceives of a system that would allow us to explore the entire system, including the far-flung Oort Cloud. However, he "doesn't recommend it" for interstellar travel, in his signature intriguingly-absent-minded fashion which makes us think it's not the first time it's crossed his mind...
What do you think, can he do it? Let us know in the comments.
