7 Ways 'The Food Babe' Spectacularly Fails To Grasp Science
4. GMOs
While we're on the subject of things the Vani Hari doesn't understand, let's talk about GMOs.
She, like so many other crunchy fruitcakes, has a massive problem with genetically modified crops and I don't think even she is sure why. There's lots of talk about the "chemicals" that are sprayed on GMO crops, and how genetically modified food is somehow cancer causing because it's not how nature intended it, and how food products with GMOs in them should be labelled.
The thing is that genetically modified crops are often created to be resistant to certain pests, specifically to reduce the number of pesticides used, and they are so heavily regulated that they need to be nutritionally identical to their natural counterparts so, yet again, it's not facts, it's just plain old fear (and a healthy sponsorship from the organic food industry).
The fact of the matter is that the human population is booming, and we need to find a way to feed them all. We're facing a food crisis and creating pest-resistant, high yield, nutrient dense crops is one way we are trying to combat this.
What's more, there are actually some issues surrounding GMOs, and they're mostly to do with economics and monopolies, but with her spectacular talent for putting 2 and 2 together and getting 'pineapple', they have flown straight over her head.
GMOs aren’t dangerous to consume and lobbying against them for the wrong reasons, pushing for labelling and whinging about imagined health risks, allows the true issues to sneak in under the radar.
