8 Bizarre Things Science Has Taught Us About Sex

2. Straight Women Are Like Unicorns

Deciding where you are on the sexual spectrum can be tricky for some, but research suggests that your gender might affect it.

A study has suggested that, whilst self-identifying straight men are likely to be definitely straight, self-identifying straight women often have a little bisexual streak in them.

345 women of varying sexual orientations were asked to watch a series of erotic videos whilst their biological arousal levels, including pupil dilation and genital response, were monitored.

It was found that women who identified as completely heterosexual were still strongly aroused by images of both men and women, whereas both straight men and lesbians were found to only be aroused by images of women.

Obviously, this could indicate that sexual arousal is perhaps not the same as sexual orientation, which is an interesting development in itself. It could be that cultural influences play an important role, particularly in a society that is more likely to allow girl-on-girl action between two straight women (and still consider them straight), whereas a man who kisses another man is immediately thought to be at lest a little bit gay.
