8 Most Haunted Places In The North East

8. Chillingham Castle

Chillingham Castle is said to be one of the most haunted castles in Britain and it can be found in the village of Chillingham, Northumberland. Built in the late 12th Century, the castle was originally a monastery and in 1298 King Edward I of England stayed in the castle before battling the Scottish army led by William Wallace himself. Sir Thomas Grey fortified the building and turned it into a castle in 1344 and his family lived there until 1933 where it was abandoned. In 1983, Sir Humphrey Wakefield bought the castle and began to work on repairs which are still happening today. His wife is a descendent from the Grey family. Lady Berkeley, the wife of Lord Grey is said to still haunt the corridors of the castle and you can hear her dress rustling along the ground. Her presence is always said to cause a cold chill and it is said that she is looking for her husband, who ran off with her sister, leaving her alone with their newborn daughter. But she isn't the only ghost to haunt this castle. 'The Radiant Boy' is said to have haunted the Pink Room of the castle and you could hear his cries of pain and fear echo in the corridors at night. He appears surrounded by a bright light and all dressed in blue, the boy would approach those sleeping in this room. Many people have seen flashes of bright blue light and the boy would disappear behind the walls. It wasn't until Sir Humphrey started the renovations that a body of a boy dressed in blue was found buried inside a 10 foot thick wall. The hauntings supposedly stopped after this discovery until Sir Humphrey started letting this room out and guests have repeatedly reported sightings of bright blue flashes appearing and disappear into the wall. Is it really an electric fault?
