8 Paradoxes Guaranteed To Melt Your Mind
4. The Omnipotence Paradox
The Omnipotence Paradox basically boils down to a simple question:
Could an omnipotent God create a rock it couldnt lift?
This paradox is basically questioning whether an omnipotent being can limit its own power - in which case they are not actually an omnipotent being.
The reasoning is thus:
If a being is all-powerful, that means that they can do anything, including create an object that is too heavy for them to lift. If that being cannot lift an object, then it is not omnipotent as there is at least one thing it cannot do. If that beingcan lift the rock then it is still not omnipotent because there is still at least one thing it cannot do (i.e. create an unliftable rock).
The conclusion that we have to draw from this is that there can be no such thing as an omnipotent being, because the nature of one's own omnipotence makes omnipotence impossible. Howeverif only omnipotence can render omnipotence impossible, then omnipotence must be possible because its non-existence means that it can not render it impossible.
You then continue this infinite logical regression until the bar closes, your wife leaves you and your brain pours out of your nose.
