The Fermi Paradox is the name given to the observation that, if the universe is as ancient and infinite as we think it is, it should be teeming with life.

This, you might have noticed, doesn't appear to be the case.

The argument is that, given the number of stars in our galaxy, anywhere between 100 and 400 billion, multiplied by the number of galaxies in the observable universe, again between 100 and 400 billion, the probability is that we should be tripping over alien life, but the universe remains paradoxically silent.

There have been a number of attempts to solvethe Fermi Paradox, ranging from mathematical equations to theologicalpondering, but despite our best efforts, we still don't knowwhy we appear to be all alone in a potentially infinite universe.
