Submechanophobia is an intense fear of submerged man-made objects within the sea. These feared objects can vary from propellers to buoys to sunken ships, that have resided at the bottom of the ocean for a prolonged amount of time and have begun to rot and fall apart.

The sufferers of the phobia may experience thoughts that include being sunken into the large objects themselves or fear seeing any dead bodies, skeletons or creatures that may be residing within them. The fear can also include underwater animatronics that are either still moving or have been rusting for years.

The sufferers diagnosed with the phobia will actively avoid any areas that they feel they are most likely to encounter the submerged objects in question. They will be staying away from the sea at all costs and under no circumstances think about going underwater diving or treasure seeking within the deep dark depths. For many sufferers, seeing any media that includes the submerged objects can trigger the phobia and anxiety to occur, even in cartoons in which the characters reside underwater (even as innocent as Finding Nemo!)
