8 Things Scientists Still Don't Understand About Your Brain
7. Where Does Personality Come From?
Rather than saying that you have a brain, it's probably more accurate to say that you are your brain. The squishy thing in your head is probably where your personality is (it would be a strange turn up for the books if we actually found that it was in your gut or something), but what is it about your brain that makes you, you?
This is all part of the nature vs. nurture debate - how much of your personality is decided by your genes and your physiology, and how much is created by your environment?
The thing is, your personality must live in your brain, but try as we might for hundreds of years, you can't necessarily tell what a person is like by looking at their brain - let alone their genes.
Many tend to favour the "nurture" side of the argument - that we are a product of our environment - but that in itself has some problems. Why, for example, do some people who have grown up in very similar circumstances, have vastly different personalities?
