8 Ways Stoya Is Redefining Porn

7. She's Willing To Talk About It... In Detail

One of the more charming aspects of Stoya's public persona is her candour. The idea that a woman should be ashamed of her own body or the things that it does seems to have never occurred to Stoya (or if it did, she must have dismissed it as useless noise pretty quickly). While engagement with porn is often passive- performers are remote, unknowable people, to be admired from a distance- Stoya has gone the other way. Through social media and essays and interviews, she has opened up about aspects of her life and her career to the point that she feels like a friend (albeit one you wouldn't want to mess with). One such example of Stoya's frankness is her discussions of contraception in adult films. She campaigned against Measure B, a law requiring the use of condoms in all porn made in Los Angeles. Through opinion pieces and public statements, she argued that this restriction wasn't the best way of keeping performers safe, while shining a light on the self-regulation already prevalent in a lot of the industry. She also wrote an essay in Vice detailing her struggles with hormonal birth control. It wasn't only interesting because she's a sex worker; it was interesting (and refreshing) because it's rare to hear any female public figure talk in graphic detail about their menstrual cycle.

Brydie is an Australian writer and performer living in London and she complains exactly the same amount about the weather as every other Australian living in London. Yes, that is her natural lip colour, no, she will not be taking any further questions at this time.
