9. Exorphin Theory: Plants Domesticated Humans

At the centre of this theory is the observation that humans show all the signs of having been domesticated, with our small jaws, lactose tolerance and social behaviours. The question is, though, by whom?

Supporters of the Exorphin Hypothesis think that our species might have been domesticated by, get this, wheat , all those years ago.

Before the agricultural revolution, wheat was just a wild grass growing in a small part of the Middle East. It found it difficult to grow on stony ground, in poor, dry soil, so it got humans to spend hours and hours each day clearing the ground, filling it with nutrients and hauling water around to ensure it grew.

Now, crop plants such as wheat, rice and potatoes fulfil all the criteria for a wildly successful species, thanks to the domestication of humans who were forced to abandon their wild lifestyles in order to aid the exorphin takeover.
