The lionfish, so called for the mane-like mass of spines that protrude from its body, is one of the most venomous fish in the ocean. The twelve species within the lionfish genus (scientific name Pterois) are quite varied in appearance but all are beautiful. Pictured is the clearfin lionfish; the only species whose spines have no markings. They are also known as turkeyfish, which is significantly less menacing. Whatever you call it, this is not a creature you want to fall out with. While they arent actively aggressive to swimmers, accidents happen and when they do, they prove fatal all too often. On top of a terrible pain, lionfish venom can give you all the standard symptoms of a nasty sting including nausea, dizziness, fever and headache. However, you may also find yourself with temporary limb paralysis or, if its really not your day, fatal heart failure. Death is particularly common in children and the elderly. In short, youd probably rather be clawed by an actual lion than stung by a lionfish. Youd certainly fare better against a turkey.
