The search for alien life is as fervent as it ever was, but what would happen if we actually found it?

Some of the greatest minds of our time (looking at you, Hawking) have warned against ever making our presence known to alien lifeforms.

Most of our efforts in alien detection focus on listening rather than broadcasting, so what would happen if one day we received a signal that proved, once and for all, the existence of other intelligent beings in the universe?

If we made contact and discovered that the aliens were dangerous, there are two options and neither are good. Option one is that they attack us, option two is that we attack them, either through self defence or blind fear, and wipe out the only other intelligent life that we know of in the universe.

However, to simply sit quietly and hide ourselves after all this time spent searching would be unthinkable to most.
