9 Drinking Games People Were Playing Centuries Ago

5. Kottabos

Where it was played: Kottabos was played at ancient Greek and Etruscan drinking parties called symposia. How it was played: Reclining back in their seat, the player would fling a bit of wine from their cup at a figurine, which had a small brass disc balanced on top of it. The player won if they could knock the disc off onto a larger disc underneath, making a bell-like sound. Other variations of the game included a messier version where the player tried to fill a precariously-balanced saucer with dregs of wine until it tipped over. Another involved a basin of water with a saucer floating in it. Again, the players would try to flick wine into the saucer until it became so heavy that it sank.
