9 'Good' Habits That Are A Total Waste Of Time

9. Detoxing

Whether you're one of those smug gits who gave up alcohol for Dry January, or one of those smug gits who drinks nothing but green juice for a few days to "flush the toxins out", detoxing is one of those things that humans do to alleviate the gnawing existential paranoia that we're all inherently sick and dying.

Whew, that was a bit intense. Apologies.

Anyway, whilst laying off the booze is probably a good idea, one month of abstinence in a year ain't gonna do dick to counteract your binge drinking and the associated health risks. It might make you feel a little better to wake up sans hangover for a month, and it might just set you on a new boozeless path, but the majority of people will tend to just hit it twice as hard once February rolls around.

Detox diets are even worse. Rather than simply being a waste of time, a detox or "cleanse" will probably do you some damage. Cutting out everything but sugary juice from your diet is going to leave you cranky, hungry, constipated and bloated, not to mention malnourished if you keep that sh*t up for too long.

Detoxing is an attractive idea, because it offers a quick fix for your many vices. Unfortunately, in practice, it just doesn't work like that.
