Okay, so maybe you don't always get all your fruit and veg in, but surely you can just pop a vitamin pill and ward off scurvy for another day?

Whatever helps you sleep at night, but unfortunately you're probably wasting you money and even perhaps risking your health. Study after study appears to indicate that vitamin supplements have little to no effect on the body, either good or bad. Supplements of antioxidants, folic acid and vitamin B have no discernible benefits and doses of beta carotene, vitamin E and vitamin A could even be harmful.

Even if you are deficient in a certain vitamin, your bottle of multivitamins might not contain any of the nutrients it claims to, as the industry is completely unregulated, the actual content of your pills is a lottery.

Unless you have a serious health issue, it's really not that difficult to keep your body topped up with the nutrients it needs. Just choose a varied diet, get a bit of sunlight and eat a god damn vegetable once in a while. Cheaper, more effective and much more delicious than popping pills.
