9 Most Popular Flat Earth Arguments, Debunked

2. Why It’s B*llocks: The Horizon, Er, Isn't Flat Actually

...unless of course you go even higher, and then you can clearly see the curvature of the Earth. Again and again, we come to the problem of scale that FEs don't appear to get their head around.

In our everyday lives, we rarely have to deal with anything much bigger than a building, and our eyes and minds are not used to comprehending objects on such vast scales of the Earth. The Earth is so large, that the degree of curvature is virtually undetectable to the naked eye at lower altitudes. We can, however, detect the Earth's curvature, even from sea level, by watching how ships and even buildings disappear below the horizon.

Take, for example, this image of Toronto as seen from across Lake Ontario, at about a distance of 50km (according to Google maps). If the Earth was flat, the buildings would obviously appear smaller, but you would be able to see the street level of the city. In reality, however, the bottoms of the buildings are lost beneath the horizon, because the surface of the Earth is sloping away. There is literally no other way to explain this, no other, more clever arguments, because it is actually as simple as that.

As for the argument regarding the Welsh Coast on the previous page, what makes you think you'd be able to detect a difference of 0.08 miles along a stretch of 50 miles with the naked eye?

If you do happen to find a Flat Earther in the wild, however, don't bother showing them images taken from space, because they will then tell you that the images are fake and NASA has lied to you.
