9 People Who Abused Drugs In Nazi Germany
3. Herman Göring
Second, only to Hitler, Göring had joined the Nazis before they came to power. In 1923, he was injured in the Beer Hall Putsch, an attempt by the Nazis to seize power over Bavaria. Because of his injuries, he became addicted to morphine. His addiction continued throughout the war.
Though he was very powerful and influential, this did not stop him from taking morphine, even whilst working. He would often leave meetings to take another dose, with some officials observing a noticeable change in demeanor afterward. He even kept a special syringe - handcrafted, with a gold ring, kept in a specially designed box. He would often use this first thing in the morning.
When finally captured by the allies, he had 24,000 opioid tablets in his suitcase. He would take twenty times the recommended dose every day, and his dosages had to be gradually reduced.
