So, the stereotype is that, when it comes to sex, men are the lascivious pursuers and women are the uptight gatekeepers. The other stereotype is that this situation only gets worse once those wedding bells sound. For some reason, people think that women turn into joyless frumps and men are just horny teenagers in business suits. The idea of the sexless marriage is so pervasive that we just take it as read that women will use sex to ensnare you into the eternal trap of matrimony, in-laws and Sunday lunch, and will cease any but the most begrudging sexual contact once the honeymoon is over. Well, bad news for the writers of lazy American sitcoms, because the opposite is actually true. Whilst it's true that single women are less promiscuous than single men, research suggests that this is more of a culturally imposed phenomenon than a biological fact. Almost all of the answers given by women in the study indicated that the reasons they would abstain from sex are pretty much all to do with social taboos. Basically, by saying €œwomen don€™t like sex as much as men€, we make it true in a sexy self-fulfilling prophecy. However, something strange happens when these women are in committed relationships. Because people in romantic relationships tend to focus more on one another than societal expectations, suddenly the social taboos are lifted and men and women€™s desire for a good bit of bonking miraculously sync up. This not only means that the ladies get their freak on, but the gents also cool off a bit. Both men and women in this context expressed equal desire for sex and pleasure. What€™s more, the men surveyed abandoned the societal expectation that they should be emotionally detached pursuers and discussed the role of sex as an important way of bringing couples closer together.
