To this day, no one has any idea of who Jack the Ripper actually was. That in itself is terrifying. Women were brutally murdered in London and considering it was given so much tabloid attention and was a high profile case, the murderer slipped away with a smug smile and the sadistic satisfaction of causing such a stir in England's capital, all whilst remaining undetected. He preyed upon women who were financially desperate and had to resort to selling their bodies on the street so they could eat. He probably would have offered them money or food so that they would accompany him to a secluded area. He was given the nickname of the Ripper not only because he literally tore his victims apart, but because that was the name he presented himself with in a letter to the authorities. Although it is believed that the letter was a hoax in an attempt to gain publicity by a reporter to increase sales, if it wasn't, this nickname is very disturbing. Jack began killing in October 1888 and targeted mainly prostitutes in the impoverished areas of London, specifically Whitechapel. Jack would cut open their throats and mutilate their abdomen but because of the precision of the cutting, it was believed that he was a man who possessed some medical knowledge, as he stole some internal organs sporadically. His worst killing was his last: Mary Jane Kelly was completely butchered. Her neck was severed down to the bone, her heart was removed, her breasts were cut off and her thighs were lying on a table. Her face was left hacked beyond recognition. And Jack got away with it.
