9 Science Approved Life Hacks To Make Everything Better

8. Can't Sleep? Get Some Rose Tinted Glasses

Well, the digital version anyway. Techniques to combat insomnia nearly always include the tip that you should stay away from screens, put down your phone and turn off your computer for a couple of hours before you go to bed. Whilst it's a lovely idea that you could spend a couple of hours sitting in your favourite chair, reading a weighty novel and perhaps smoking a pipe, this is the 21st century and putting your devices down for two minutes, let alone two hours, is easier said than done. Well, never fear, because you could have the best of both worlds. The reason you're told to put the smartphone down is because the white-blue light it emits is similar to bright daylight. This tricks your brain into thinking it's morning already, and it wakes you up. Software such as f.lux and Twilight will tint your screen slightly orange, filtering out the blue end of the spectrum. This cuts the "wake up" signals to your brain and lets you browse Instagram to your heart's content. You can also set it to gradually tint it automatically, in sync with the sunset, so you don't have to remember to do it. It looks a little bit weird at first, but after a couple of minutes, your eyes will adjust so that it looks completely normal. In fact, if you disable it at any point, you will wonder how you ever used to put up with the blinding glare in the first place.
