Much to the delight of middle class 40-somethings the world over, red wine has practically been pushed as a superfood over the last few years.

If you listen to the hype, it will lower your risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke, reduce cholesterol and make you look real fancy whilst you're drinking it. You should not, however, listen to the hype.

Red wine's protective qualities were supposed to derive from the resveratrol that occurs in it. Unfortunately, a 15-year study in Italy's wine region of Chianti (famous for producing wine that goes well with fava beans and human flesh), found that "the people with the highest concentration of resveratrol metabolites were no less likely to have died of any cause than those with no resveratrol."

Basically, it's a load of wine-soaked hogwash.
