7. "Baby Frogs"Are Actually A New Species
A few years ago, scientists announced the discovery of a brand new species of frog, and they were adorably tiny. The only thing is that we'd actually known about them for over a hundred years.
We've known about Microhyla nepenthicola - a teeny tiny species of frog, for nearly a hundred years now but, up until very recently, scientists always just assumed that they were the babies of a different species. Red faces all round.
The miniscule little frogs have been in museums since Victorian times, but only now has it occurred to scientists that the pea-sized amphibians are actually real, proper grown ups.
This mix up would be like aliens dropping out of the sky tomorrow and assuming that humans, with our diminutive stature and less luxurious body hair, were the juvenile versions of mountain gorillas, and setting up a meeting with the biggest silverback instead.
