A Song Of Ice And Fire: Every Book Ranked Worst To Best

1. A Clash Of Kings

A Song Of Ice And Fire
Bantam

After A Game of Thrones introduced the world of Westeros, and the plethora of characters and story lines involved, A Clash of Kings takes the reigns at the beginning of the War of the Five Kings. A lot of the Song of Ice and Fire saga is based around war and conflict, none bigger and better than this.

Though Daenerys' time in Qarth is not her most compelling, there is more than enough going on in Westeros to make up for it. While Stannis and Renly emerge as rivals for Joffrey's crown, Robb marches south to avenge his father's death, and Balon Greyjoy decides to get in on the action after Theon turns his cloak against his brother and king.

As is the case in most of the books, Tyrion is one of the highlights, but A Clash of Kings is possibly the best for the Hand of the King. The Imp's no nonsense approach to his nephew on the throne, and genius scheming to protect himself and his family is everything that makes the character great.

The icing on the cake that is this incredible novel is the Battle of the Blackwater. Stretching over five chapters, from three characters' point of view, Stannis' attack on King's Landing is one of the most gripping sequences in the entire saga, leaving readers unable to put the book down.
