According to Apple we are now in the middle of a post PC revolution with more than 73% of Apples profits coming from their three IOS powered devices. In the last quarter Apple sold more than 15.4 million iPads which is more PCs than any PC maker sold. With 200,000 apps created specifically for the iPad this makes their announcement of the iPad 3 today one of their most important in recent years. As predicted by pretty much everyone the iPad 3 was announced today and below is a breakdown of the main features;
Retina Display
No surprise at all with this one and according to Tim Cook its amazing. Weve taken it to a whole new level, and we are redefining the category that Apple created with the original iPad. It makes amazing improvements on the most fundamental features. Thats pretty impressive talk but what does it actually mean well it means that this iPad will have a 9.7-inch Retina Display running a 20481536 panel with 264ppi featuring over a million pixels. Apples Phil Schiller went onto say Put another way, you all have an HDTV at home, 1080p an iPad has more pixels. Thats incredible,.
The Processor
As predicted the iPad 3 comes with Apples new A5X processor, which is indeed a dual core processor with quad core Tegra graphics. They didnt give much more details on its speed needless to say it will be a big upgrade on the iPad 2 but where is the completely quad coire A6 processor we were hoping for? I guess thats being saved for the iPhone 5.
The Camera
The camera also gets an improvement but not just the usual mega pixel upgrade. The new rear-facing camera is 5 megapixels and features image stabilisation, a five element lens and auto focus. It will also shoot 1080p HD video which will look great on the new display. The front facing camera is now being called an iSight camera like the one featured on Macs, which should improve the quality of those Facetime and Skype chats.
4G LTE
It is also available with 4G LTE connectivity, which would allow for speeds of up to 42mps. However unless you live in certain parts of the States this really wont be something you can use for a year or two and if your Telco provider does offer it and allows you to you can use your new iPad as a mobile hotspot.
Siri
As I predicted earlier today Siri is not included although voice dictation is. A nice plus point but not really a big selling point in my opinion.
Pricing
The pricing pretty much stays the same as the previous iPad line up; 16GB WiFi $499 32GB WiFi $599 64GB WiFi $699 All 4G models are $130 extra It will be available in in 10 counties next Friday, including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany. Available for pre order today.
Apple TV
As predicted a new verison of the popular set top box was also announced today. The new version of Apple TV can handle 1080p and features a new interface other than that its not really that different. No mention of whether or not the existing Apple TV will be able to upgrade to the new interface or not.
Other Announcements
There will be upgraded apps to harness the features of the new iPad; iMovie, Garageband, Numbers, Pages and Keynote. Along with a whole new IOS version of the popular Mac app iPhoto. iTunes will be upgraded to 10.6 later on today not details on what it will include yet. A new version of the popular game Infinity Blade called Infinity Blade Dungeon.
