Pogs

POGSWhat?: Crazy popular game from the early 1990's that utilised decorative discs as the centre piece of the game play. The rules were simple: Each player contributes an equal number of Pogs to build a stack with the pieces face down which will be used during the game. The players then take turns to throw their 'Slammer' onto the piles causing the discs to scatter all over the game board. Any discs that are face up are won by the player who threw the 'Slammer'. Pieces that land face down are re-stacked and the game continues until there are no Pogs left to stack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq9r50EYJh0 Who?: The 1990's Pogs revival is most commonly credited to Blossom Galbiso a teacher from Hawaii who taught the once popular pastime to her classes and it really caught on. By 1992 STANPAC Inc were printing millions of Pogs a week and thus a new craze was born. Before long Pogs were branded with everything from Disney characters to scenes from Star Wars and were even banned in some schools as they were considered to be a form of gambling. Amusement Factor: Pogs became so huge that they even had a World POG Federation with it's own mascot known as Pogman but that didn't change the fact that they were just pieces of commercialised cardboard cashing in on a classic 'old-timer's game that utilised bottle caps from bottles of passion fruit, orange and guava (POG). I think I must have been one of the few people this craze just passed by. I had Tazos. They were cool too, right? Awesome Rating: Pogtastic. Wont get you a girlfriend though really will they?
