Before Fifty Shades Of Grey: 10 Classic Works Of Erotic Literature

1. Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure - John Cleland

Screen Shot 2013 11 07 At 19 47 27 The first pornographic novel to arise from England, Fanny Hill is a pleasing bit of literary smut to liven up your reading schedule. Fanny is orphaned at age 15. She goes to London to try and find work as a maid but she falls into the clutches of a brothel madam - Mrs Bown. As Fanny is a virgin, Mrs Brown sells her to the wealthy Lord B. Fanny watches Mrs Brown have sex with a well hung man and she marvels at the size of his penis, a little bit scared of it. The other girls reassure her about big willies and they indulge in mutual masturbation sessions. Fanny falls in love with a young nobleman called Charles. And they are happy shagging each other's brains out. He sets Fanny up in a flat and Fanny works at being more urbane and educated. She becomes pregnant after 8 months but tragedy strikes when Charles' dad sends him to the South Seas to find a fortune. Fanny miscarries and becomes very depressed. Inevitably, she drifts towards prostitution again. She is introduced to Mr H and finds out you can have sex without love. Mr H puts her up in flat and plies her with goods but Fanny discovers that he is shagging the maid on the side, so she sets out to seduce Will - Mr H's servant. Again there are descriptions of giant male members. Mr H catches them at it and turfs Fanny out on her ear. Fanny goes to live with a bunch of prostitutes and participates in orgies, sadomasochism, anal sex and sex with homosexuals. Fanny also participates in regular sex - always with men with massive schlongs - this seems to be an obsession of Cleland's. She is taken in by an older man who leaves his fortune to her when he dies. And lo and behold! Here comes Charles back from his adventures in the South Sea, ready to sweep Fanny off her feet again.. Cleland's novel first surfaced in 1748 and has been scandalising readers and the authorities ever since. Cleland actually renounced the novel in court after he was charged with 'corrupting the King's subjects' - and what glorious corruption that is! Fanny Hill is chock full of sexual deviancy to suit you, no matter what your tastes are and it positively and joyously wallows in perversion and extreme raunchiness. Once you get past the arcane prose style, the book is utterly captivating and totally arousing - that is, if you have a pulse and an interest in sex. Fanny Hill has been adapted for the big screen on several occasions but none of the movie versions capture the unrepentant sexual wantoness of the book.
