The first component to successfully escaping Alcatraz was to work as a team. The prison was the United States most secure prison facility and accomplices added strength to the plan by enabling them to cover one and other and keep a lookout for guards. The three men who escaped from Alcatraz on the 11th June 1962 were John Anglin, his brother Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris. The Anglin brothers were serving time for bank robbery and had been moved to Alcatraz following several failed escape attempts at their previous prison. Morris was serving time in Alcatraz thanks to charges of armed robbery and narcotics possession.
There was also a fourth man involved in the escape, Allen West. West was serving time for car theft but, due to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to escape.
