Reported ‘Massacre’ in Syria is Evidence For International Community To Act

Forces loyal to President Bashar al Assad are reported to have killed up to 100 people, including women and children, in the Syrian province of Hama. This appears to be the latest government attempt to crush the rebellion in Syria. However, with UN forces unable to visit the province to verify the attacks, condemnation is all that can be done at this point. Many leaders have spoken out against this regime and its latest apparent €˜Massacre€™. Prime Minister David Cameron has stated that if the reports are true, it was €œyet another absolutely brutal and sickening attack.€ US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said €œWe are disgusted with what we are seeing.€ The reports of this attack came on the eve of Kofi Annan€™s latest proposal to the United Nations Security Council where he would lay out his new peace plan talks. His last talks with President Assad have evidently failed. Since then, this is the second massacre to have taken place. President Assad blamed the first massacre on terrorists and he has banned many foreign diplomats from Syria. Therefore, the Syrian government are refusing any responsibility for these horrific events and they are excluding the international community from discussion. President Assad and the Syrian government are once again tempting the international community to take action. So far, little has happened. Action will soon become necessary in order to save the Syrian people from such tyranny and provide them with the aid that is becoming vitally important.
