Stephen King's 10 Best Non-Horror Tales
2. Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption
Also from Different Seasons, and arguably the best known of Stephen King's non-horror work, Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption may very well be one of King's finest works ever, would be picked by many to be his best work (and is most certainly in the discussion). It's also very possibly one of the best prison stories ever penned.
An uplifting tale featuring the subtitle "Hope Springs Eternal," it portrays the downfall of Andy Dufresne, a banker wrongly convicted for the murder of his wifeand his methodical plotting to escape from prison over decades. Cleverly, the reader is never let in on that until after the fact.
Instead the story examines Andy's struggles in prison, his friendship with Red, the man who can get you anything, and the way in which he falls back on his real life skills as a banker, soon finding himself doing tax returns - and more - for the staff and management of the prison.
While the movie is a very faithful adaptation, it's still more than worth reading.
