Long before the events of the main series, Albus Dumbledore – the newly appointed headmaster – rejected Tom Riddle’s request to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts. Ever since then, no one has been able to hold this teaching post for longer than a year.
As a result, there are seven Defence Against the Dark Arts teachers featured in Harry’s adventures – one for each entry in the series, and it’s fair to say there has been a vast range of quality from these seven professors.
Professor Lupin, for instance, was by far the most likeable. He was a welcome change after the pathetic teaching attempts of Professor Quirrell and Professor Lockhart.
Professor Umbridge, on the other hand, was horrific. As well as the monotonous nature of her lessons, she actively enjoyed torturing her own students. Indeed, she was almost as bad as Professor Carrow – the Death Eater who taught during The Deathly Hallows.
Professor Moody and Professor Snape, meanwhile, had a very practical approach to the subject. And as intimidating as they could be at times, their lessons certainly weren’t dull.
