10 Biggest FIFA World Cup "What Ifs"

7. Diego Maradona's Positive Drug Test, USA 1994

Despite all the drama Maradona went through since Italia '90, at USA '94 he once again resembled the man who could take Argentina all the way. He even had Argentina's most capable team in recent memory to help him, a squad which boasted a prime Batistuta, Redondo, Balbo and Caniggia.

Truth be told, most of the other top teams looked shaky. Spain and Germany struggled to play well for more than 60 minutes, Italy were almost solely dependent on Baggio, Brazil was regarded as one of the poorest teams they had sent to the finals in many years, and the Dutch seemed incapable of anything resembling consistency.

Argentina had the chance to win yet again on a golden platter. Then a certain banned substance showed up. A firm belief in the Argentine camp that they could win it all was replaced by dismay, chaos and panic.

All confidence evaporated after Maradona's B sample tested positive and he was banned from further participation in the tournament. Regardless of having a squad stacked with talent, they fell apart in the first knockout round.

Now, had El Diego kept his nose clean, it would be a safe bet that Argentina could have gone very far. Winning the World Cup far. A greater fairytale could not have been written. After losing it all and becoming the villain in Naples, Maradona could have done the business one more time, to prove once and for all that he is and forever will be the greatest.

At 34, there wasn't much left for Diego football wise. But for the rest of their squad, it would have acted as the springboard to push them towards greater things. Not just cult status.
