10 Biggest FIFA World Cup "What Ifs"

5. Gonzalo Higuain's Miss, Brazil 2014

Gonzalo Higuain has the dubious honour of missing one of the easiest chances ever created in a World Cup final. In a dull and mostly eventless game, the one goal lead would have been enough to seal the deal in regulation time.

It wasn't the first time, or the last time, Higuain would miss an easy chance in a major final. But missing one in the World Cup final is about as bad as it gets. In this instance, one could say with a high degree of certainty that Argentina would have won. Germany struggled to create decent chances, even though their possession football made them appear to be in control of the tie.

Higuain would go on to have very prolific spells with Napoli and Juventus, with more forgettable ones at Milan and Chelsea. There is no doubt that converting the chance in Rio would have pushed Higuain into the top tier list of players. He is a prolific striker with the ability to handle pressure and deliver when it matters most.

Unfortunately, Higuain let the magnitude of the moment get to him. This, along with misses in two separate Copa America finals, unfairly relegated him to be seen as an "above average" talent, rather than the superb player he really is.

The miss also left Messi with the one thing he'd never have over a certain other Argentina legend...
