10 Biggest FIFA World Cup Controversies

7. Luis Suarez Takes A Bite

Luis Suarez is not an individual afraid of having a little controversy hanging over his career. He has been accused of diving in front of officials in order to win some favourable decisions and has been banned for racially abusing opposing players in the past. However, there is one consistent stream of controversy that has followed Suarez wherever his career has taken him more than any other.

It all began in November 2010 when Suarez was with Ajax playing against PSV. During an altercation with Otman Bakkal, the Uruguayan striker was seen biting the PSV attacking midfielder, netting him a seven game suspension, a hefty fine and the nickname 'the cannibal of Ajax'.

During a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in April 2012, Suarez was at it again, this time targeting Branislav Ivanovic with a bit to the elbow. Another ban, this time of ten games, followed but Suarez wasn't done yet.

At the 2014 World Cup during a group stage game against Italy, Suarez bit one of his opponents for a third time. This time it was Giorgio Chiellini who was the unlucky recipient, receiving a bite on his shoulder following an off the ball altercation with Suarez. The Uruguayan was punished even harder this time, being banned from all football for four months following the incident.
