10 Biggest Sporting Failures Of 2012

10. Phillips Idowu

phillip idowu Labelled as one of 'the Faces of the Games', Idowu simply failed to live up to his billing. After being crowned triple jump world champion in 2009, and runner up in 2011, there were high hopes for the London born star. However coming into the games Idowu had been dogged with injury, to the extent that he did not attend the teams' training camp in Portugal. Come August time it was clear Idowu was quite simply not at his best. Given his London roots the triple jumper was determined to compete and as such he took his place among the other members of team GB. But, as expected, Phillips was unable to rekindle any of his previous form and went out in the qualifying stages. A sad end to what should have been the culmination of his career.

9. Bayern Munich

Such was the fairytale nature of Chelsea's Champions League success, Bayern Munich's failure in 2012 was something that slipped under the radar. The German giants missed out on three of the major honours available to them last season. After having their title stolen away from them in 2011 by the surprise package of Borussia Dortmund, many expect Die Bayern to regain their crown in 2012. However once again Jurgen Klopp and his young side ended the season at the top of the pile. The story was the same in German Cup, with Bayern once again succumbing to Dortmund. After those two losses many thought that Bayern would save their season by defeating Chelsea in the Champions League final. With the match being played at Bayern's home ground and Chelsea without a permanent manager, victory seemed at certainty. Despite this, Bayern were unable to see of Di Matteo's men and missed out and yet another major honour.
