I'm cheating just a little to open things up here, but it's basically because so much happened between the time Dana White first took interest in Bellator's lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, and the time they offered him a contract. With Gilbert Melendez and the Strikeforce guys having been brought into the UFC by 2011, Eddie Alvarez was universally recognized as the best 155lb'er not already under contact to the UFC. Thing is, the Bellator champ lost his strap to Michael Chandler in a surprise upset in November 2011. That upset, however, cleared the way for him to make it to the UFC - he wasn't a reigning champ. He had two fights left on his Bellator contract, and he won them both. Following his win over Patricky Friere, Dana White personally congratulated him on Twitter. Meanwhile, Frankie Edgar was in the process of losing his lightweight title to Benson Henderson. He lost the rematch August 2012, so he was no longer champ when Alvarez was finally offered a UFC contract - but it was still a dream fight for many. It had been a dream fight throughout Edgar's time as champion. However, Benson Henderson could have been a suitable replacement. Henderson was talking about a superfight of his own, with GSP, but he was getting way ahead of himself. Alvarez vs. Henderson would have been a more reasonable fight, and a dream come true as well. In the end, neither happened. Bellator matched the UFC contract offer, although Eddie Alvarez claimed they couldn't, as the UFC offered PPV dollars, and Bellator had yet to hold a PPV of their own. They insisted they intended to, and the matter wound up dragged into the courts, with Alvarez losing over a year to the contract debacle. In the end, he still sits in Bellator, owing them at least one more fight, but he is once against their lightweight champion.
