10 Famous Sporting Protests
6. One Team In Tallinn
Okay, pay close attention here because this is an example of a protest being met with another protest.
Scotland’s football team were due to play Estonia in a World Cup qualifier in 1996, but their opponents did not show up for the kick-off.
The Tartan Army complained to FIFA about the temporary floodlighting at the Kadrioru Stadium and the match, originally scheduled for 6.45pm local time, was moved to 1.00pm.
The Estonian team felt besmirched by Scotland questioning their facilities and were also upset about a potential loss of vital television revenue. They insisted that the game go ahead as planned and turned up at the ground late afternoon, some hours after Scotland had already been awarded the match by forfeit.
Scotland were made to officially start the game before the referee abandoned it after three seconds, prompting sarcastic celebrations from players and fans.
FIFA later ordered the match to be replayed in neutral territory, and a 0-0 draw helped Scotland reach the 1998 World Cup - the last one for which they have qualified.
