Because of the example set by Muhammad Ali and the tireless and selfless work of the Civil Rights leaders, sportsmen such as LeBron James can thrive in modern-day America.

But the United States still has major issues with racism and equality, including what the African-American community feel is their continued mistreatment by the police force.

There have been several high-profile cases related to this across America in the last decade. One of which, the 2014 death of Eric Garner following questionable police behaviour, led to James and other NBA superstars bringing the matter to mainstream attention once more.

Kobe Bryant and Kyrie Irving were among those to join James in wearing shirts emblazoned with “I Can’t Breathe” during warm-ups for matches which proceeded Garner’s death. A video recording showed those to be Garner’s last words while he was being arrested - his friends claim it was for splitting up a fight. He passed away of a heart attack one hour later.
