10 Football Books You Must Read Before You Die

5. The Story Of The World Cup €“ Brian Glanville

Perhaps the most respected elder statesman of football journalism, Brian Glanville€™s history of football€™s showpiece tournament makes for engaging and essential reading. The book is updated on the eve of every tournament and such is the quality of the writing that a glance at some football supporter€™s bookshelves will reveal several updated copies of the book. Glanville looks at each World Cup, providing in depth analysis of each team and the tournament itself. Whilst the book serves as an excellent review of each tournament, Glanville looks at themes evident in each competition, from rule changes and tactical innovations, to unnecessary meddling from the game€™s governing body, FIFA. Anyone familiar with Glanville€™s work will know he does not suffer fools gladly and his writing can be scathing where he feels it is justified. What truly comes through, however, is a true passion for the game and an almost incomparable knowledge of it.
