10 Great Players Who Were Ruined By Spurs

8. Leigh Mills

In the case of Leigh Mills, it's not that he was a great player when he joined Spurs, it's that he was a great young player who was expected to go on to become a truly great senior professional. Mills joined the club in 2004 as a mere sixteen year old. He joined from Swindon Town, before having made a senior appearance for the Robins, and was garnering interest from a host of Premier League clubs that included the likes of Everton €“ indeed, the Toffees had a bid of £150,000 turned down prior to him signing for Spurs. Mills had risen to prominence as a solid central defender in youth football and had started to catch the eyes of bigger clubs when he captained the England Under-16 side to victory over Wales. Consequently, he was given the tag of one of the country€™s top prospects and a lot was expected of him upon his arrival at White Hart Lane. He lasted five years at the club €“ during which time he was loaned out to both Brentford and Gillingham €“ but he failed to impact on the first team set-up at all and was released from his contract in 2009. He completely retired from professional football after that and has spent the last few seasons playing for the likes of Winchester City, Eastleigh and Blackfield and Langley. He is now back at Winchester City in the Wessex Football League at just 26 years old. What on Earth went wrong at Spurs?
