10 Incredible Stories From The Summer Olympics

5. Derek Redmond (1992)

Going into the Barcelona 1992 Olympics, Derek Redmond expected to land on the podium, going off the momentum of being part of the 400m relay team that beat the USA in 1991. Despite having experienced some minor injuries in the preceding months, Redmond had total confidence that he would make it into the finals, and stood a chance of earning a medal. But tragedy struck in the 400m semi-finals. Halfway through the race, Redmond tore his hamstring.

Refusing medical attention, Redmond continued the race, limping around the track on his one good leg. When he reached the final stretch of the race, he was joined by his father, who had jumped the barrier and pushed officials aside to support his son across the line. Continuing to brush off officials, who were somewhat confused by this strange old man shouting at them to go away, Derek and his father moved back into his lane to finish the race to a standing ovation from the crowd.

The sight of Redmond being supported across the line is an inspiring sight, and shows that even if athletes don't win medals, they can still earn the respect and adoration of the crowd.

They don't let me write here anymore. I think they were put off by my handlebar moustache.
