10 Incredible Stories From The Summer Olympics
3. Eric Moussambani (2000)
Entering the Olympics as a wildcard, Equatorial Guinean Eric Moussambani became a physical representation for the determination and drive that is inherent in every Olympic athlete. Moussambani found himself the only competitor in his race after the other two athletes disqualified themselves. They didn't just jump the gun, they took it out to the high jump and had Sergey Kliugin win his gold medal over it - that's how far they preceded it.
What followed was what started as an amusing one-man heat, but turned into an emotional rollercoaster. Moussambani, who taught himself how to swim in a hotel pool before he was picked up by the South African swimming coach, had never been in an Olympic-sized swimming pool before the Games.
After he completed the first 50m with relative ease, Moussambani began to struggle in the second half of the race, carrying himself entirely with his upper body. As he began to falter in the centre of the pool, the crowd spurred him on to finish the race. The time didn't matter to them, just that he made it.
Completing the heat in 1:52:47, Moussambani wasn't going to win any medals, but he'd won over everyone that watched his heat. He would later go on to swim a personal best of 57 seconds, but was denied entry to any further Olympic Games. In 2012, Moussambani was appointed as the coach of Equatorial Guinea's national team.
