The incident between John Terry and Anton Ferdinand in 2011 became a hugely contentious topic in English football and illustrated the work that still needs to be done to eradicate instances of racism from the beautiful game.

When an independent commission concluded that Terry was, in fact, guilty of using racist language, Terry's teammate Ashley Cole's statement in support of the former England captain came under fire from the media.

In response to the ruling, Cole would take to Twitter to make his feelings known, referring to the FA as a "bunch of tw*ts". Despite later apologising, Cole was fined £90,000 for his social media misstep.

However, Cole wasn't the only player to be reprimanded for their social media activity in the aftermath of the controversial incident. Rio Ferdinand was fined £45,000 for describing former England teammate Cole as "choc-ice" in a since-deleted tweet.
