Although still beloved by Golden State Warriors fans for his role as the figurehead of their championship-winning 1974/5 season, Rick Barry was detested in his playing days for his cockiness, and subjected to ridicule for his unorthodox underarm free throws. However, he gained the most notoriety during his post-playing broadcast career when - while calling a game alongside beloved NBA icon Bill Russell - he claimed the the Celtics legend had "a watermelon smile". Allegedly unaware of the racial implications of such a saying, Barry had an apology eventually accepted by Russell. It was an embarrassing incident for all involved, although Russell must be commended for his calm lack of response (which led to an incredibly uncomfortable silence on air). Barry was not invited back into the commentary booth for the following season.
