10 Rule Changes That Should Be Made In Sport
6. Two Video Challenges Per Manager In Football
The use of video technology has been demanded in football for a number of years but we don't want the game to reach a point where every offside, disallowed goal or penalty appeal is being questioned and reviewed.
It seems inevitable that some kind of playback system will eventually be introduced but its use should be limited to two challenges per manager in each game.
Arguments have been made that the effective use of the hawk-eye system in tennis should mean that football can also make use of technology but the governing bodies must be aware that over-use will result in more problems than solutions.
If managers are only permitted to make two challenges per match, it would ensure that games continue to flow at their natural pace and discourage speculative challenges in order to waste a few seconds towards the end of a game.
If a manager successfully overturns a decision, they retain their number of challenges like players do in both tennis and cricket. Some incidents will be open to interpretation and a panel of three officials may be used to make the call but as long as only two unsuccessful challenges are permitted, there should be little change to the game as we know it.
